OUR THEIR
Commemorative Coin OUR HERO ON A PEDESTAL, 2007
For the Ministry of Finance I designed two coins worth 5, – and 10, – euro commemorating the 400th birthday of Dutch sea war hero Michiel de Ruyter. By decoupling the words PEARL, OUR, THEIR and FEAR this national money questions the heroes on pedestals. The words OUR and THEIR give subtle commentary on the so-called WE- THEY polemic.
The coin is not suitable to toss: on both sides, the value (tails) on both sides is a portrait visible (head).
